Acne
Acne is the most common skin condition in the U.S., occurring when hair follicles clog with oil and dead skin cells. It produces whiteheads, blackheads, and inflamed pimples.
Symptoms
Whiteheads, blackheads, red papules, pustules, and deeper nodules or cysts on the face, chest, and upper back. Post-inflammatory dark spots or scarring may develop.
Causes and risk
Excess sebum, abnormal follicular keratinization, Cutibacterium acnes bacteria, and inflammation. Hormonal fluctuations, family history, and occlusive cosmetics increase risk.
How it is evaluated
Diagnosis is clinical based on lesion type and distribution. We grade severity as mild, moderate, or severe. Hormonal labs may be ordered in women with signs of androgen excess.
Treatment
Mild acne responds to topical retinoids and benzoyl peroxide. Moderate cases may need oral antibiotics or combination oral contraceptives. Severe scarring acne may warrant isotretinoin. Our Chicago team tailors regimens to skin type.
