Pneumonia is an infection in the lungs. It can be mild or severe depending on the cause and the patient's overall health.

Symptoms

Symptoms include cough, fever, chills, shortness of breath, chest pain with breathing, and fatigue.

Causes and risk

Viruses, bacteria, and aspiration can all cause pneumonia.

How it is evaluated

We review breathing, oxygen level, heart rate, fever, exam findings, and whether imaging is needed.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause and severity and can include antibiotics, antiviral care, supportive treatment, or hospital referral.
